U7's

The U7's is the first year of mini/midi rugby in the 3 stages of RFU's continuum and the first step into competitive rugby.

The U7's and U8's play tag rugby, a completely non contact, safe and enjoyable variant of the game which allows them time to learn the basic handling and evasive skills before the continuum's staggered introduction of the contact side of the game at U9's.

  • Between 5 and 7 players in a side.
  • The object of the game is to score a try worth 5 points by placing the ball down with downward pressure on or over the try line.
  • The ball can only be passed sideways or backwards through the air.
  • All players wear a tag belt around the waist outside their shirts with two tags attached to it by Velcro.
  • A 'TAG' is the removal of one of the two tags from the ball carriers belt, which constitutes a tackle (only the ball carrier can be tagged).
  • When the ball carrier is tagged they must pass the ball within 3 steps or 3 seconds. (Players are however allowed one step to score a try after being tagged).
  • After the ball has been passed the tagger must return the tag before they can take any further part in the game. If the tag is thrown on the ground or they play on with the tag a penalty will be awarded against them.
  • Only a player with both tags attached can take part in the game.
  • When a tag is made all the players from the taggers team must attempt to retire towards their own try line until they are behind the ball.
  • If a player in an offside position intercepts, prevents or slows down a pass from the tagged player to a team mate, a penalty will be awarded against them. (unless they start from an onside position when the ball is played).
  • Free-passes are used when starting or restarting the game, when the ball is passed or knocked forward, when the ball goes into touch and are awarded for penalties to the non-offending team..
  • At a free start the starter cannot run with the ball and the receiving player can not run from more than 2 metres behind passer - opponents 7 metres away on line parallel to goal line.
  • During a free-pass players must be behind the ball carrier, whilst the opposing team must be 7 metres back towards there own try line.
  • No Kicking
  • No Handing or Fending off tacklers, or shielding of tags.
  • Players must not pull the ball out of an opponents grasp or deliberately make contact with another player.
  • Players play tag on their feet with the ball in their hands, if the ball goes to ground you can pick it up but not dive on the floor
  • If a try is scored by a player off their feet it will be disallowed.
  • If the whistle blows you should IMMEDIATELY stop what you're doing and stand still.
